Theatre Passe Muraille and Buddies in Bad Times Theatre present: Acha Bacha
For years, Zaya has balanced his relationship with religion and his queer identity; but as secrets from the past reveal themselves, and crisis strikes his family, he is torn between loyalties, culture, and time. Acha Bacha boldly explores the intersections between queerness, gender identity, and Islamic culture in the Pakistani diaspora. It is a show about the way we love, the way we are loved, and how sometimes love is not enough.
Bilal Baig is a young queer-genderqueer-muslim playwright, actor and devised theatre-maker. His first play, Acha Bacha, will have its world premiere at Theatre Passe Muraille in February 2018 in association with Buddies in Bad Times Theatre. His other plays, blue eyes killed him without blinking (The Foundry 2017) and Khwaja Sera (Emerging Creators Unit 2017) are currently in development at Factory Theatre and Buddies respectively. He has written two personal essays which will be featured in the upcoming publications: The Gay Heritage Project and Theatre Passe Muraille: A Collective History. As an actor, Bilal has worked in new play workshops through the Theatre Centre, Studio 180 and Factory Theatre, and has performed in productions with Theatre By the Bay, Smoothieland Performance Projects and the Rhubarb Festival. Bilal is also part of a collective that creates online and offline spaces for queer + trans south asians called A Colour Deep.
